If you’ve been following our talks about the Tiny House movement, whether you are beginning to think that a tiny house may be in your future or not, you are probably beginning to realize that there is just too much clutter in your life. This time of year is a good chance to take stock of your life and your world; along with resolutions like weight loss and fitness, and eliminate some of the extra junk in your life.

Then you begin telling yourself that there is no way your can live without your stuff. All the tech that you have collected over the years is a part of who you are! Maybe this year you should take more time to connect with the people, rather than the things, in your life.

No one wants to be without their modern digital conveniences. Their is really no reason that you should be. Especially when the tech world has given us a great tool to get rid of so many of the gadgets we depend upon. An iPad has the unique ability to replace many of the other devices and gadgets that clutter our shelves. The same thing can be said for a smartphone or even one of the Android tablets, but at this point they lack the overwhelming versatility of the iPad.

The iPad is the “microwave oven” of computers; it can’t do everything that a full sized desktop or laptop can do, but it does enough things well enough to be a replacement in some cases. There are a lot of office suite programs available for both iPad and Android, and they are constantly improving in performance and functionality.

One of the big clutter makers that a tablet can replace is gaming consoles with their associated cartridges, discs, controllers and wires. You can even stream the game onto your TV from your tablet. The tablet can even replace the TV to a certain extent, since you can stream video movies and shows from the ‘net.

Books aren’t really gadgets, but they do take up a lot of space, so eliminating a few of them from my shelves will lets me display more work from my favorite designers. This is one of the few areas where Android seems to be ahead of the iPad, but not by much. Reading a book from a device is a lot more pleasurable than you would imagine, and there is no denying the fun of having several hundred books with you at any one time.
